Electronic Textbooks - Efficient Replacements for Traditional College Textbooks

In the last few years, college campus bookstores have continuously put students under pressure, selling curricular textbooks at prices that exceed the financial possibilities of the average student, already burdened by high tuition costs and additional expenses for one's education. According to recent studies, a required new course textbook can cost between $100 and $200 in the campus bookstore, students rarely finding better offers in other specialized offline resources. Forced to spend a small fortune in order to gather a minimum number of curricular textbooks, students nationwide suffer pronounced gaps in their budgets during each school year. Although they clearly realize that they are being ripped off, most students continue to spend exaggerated sums of money on new college textbooks available for purchase in college campus bookstores; others look for cheaper alternatives in used bookstores or on the Internet, while some decide to borrow their needed textbooks from colleagues.

According to a recent study conducted by CALPIRG - the California Public Interest Research Group in 59 superior educational facilities across the country, college textbook prices have increased at four times the rate of inflation over the last few years. As very few parties are currently trying to find efficient solutions to the problem, the phenomenon continues to grow and is expected to become even more acute in the near future. Considering the fact that the average cost of college textbooks is estimated at $900 a year per student, study materials substantially add to the already high cost of a higher education.

The high costs of today's college textbooks represent a problem with many different aspects. The primary reason why college textbook prices have rocketed over the last few years is poor competition on the market. As long as college bookstores continue to hold the monopoly over the specialized market, the costs of new college textbooks are expected to grow further. Although at present there are many competitive resources that offer both new and used textbooks for more affordable prices than those established by campus bookstores, they currently cover a small segment of the market and don't pose a serious threat to college campus bookstores.

The unaffordable prices of most curricular college textbooks are primarily the consequence of frequent and often unneeded updates and reviews, but also high production costs, according to textbook publishers. Thus, an effective solution to the problem would be to completely eliminate the costs of ink and paper by replacing traditional college textbooks with electronic study materials. In electronic format, the college textbooks of tomorrow will not only be substantially cheaper, but will also include interactive content, thus stimulating students' imagination and raising their interest for learning.

Digital college textbooks are expected to offer major educational advantages, as they will comprise many different tools into a single volume. Unlike traditional textbooks, such study materials will introduce videos, simulations and various interactive games which will help students better understand the topics discussed in class. The next generation of e-books will open new educational perspectives, creating a new, innovative model for teaching. By corroborating affordability with great educational value, the electronic college textbooks of tomorrow will open many new horizons for students in superior educational facilities worldwide.

Customer Review: External Hard Drive

The Western Digital 2.0 GB external hard drive is great. It backs up my computer automatically every night with tons or room to spare to download music, movies, etc. I highly recommend this hard drive.

Customer Review: Ticking Time Bomb

I received this drive for Christmas. It lasted two and a half months of light use before failing inexplicably. Blinking front indicator light, but the drive won't spin up and no computer I connect it to will recognize it. The day before it worked fine. Tech support was unhelpful, and I'm loathe to exchange the unit for another from the manufacturer. The drive is sealed inside the plastic shell, making removal difficult. I would not use this drive for anything valuable, it's cheaply made and untrustworthy.

Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)

Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996)
Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting.

The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.

For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown

I love this show. But, the DVD color ruined it. Even with the brightness all the way up, the people had black blobs on their heads instead of hair and the shadows were all pitch black and the bright colors were bluish.

Oh and I bought the special edition, in 2008, and it said it had been remastered for the best quality in picture and sound. Well, they still have some work to do!

I returned the DVD and got the tapes from Amazon marketplace. So beautiful and well worth it!! Get the tapes. There are 6 tapes and even with the hassles of the tapes I was as enchanted as I was when I first saw this on PBS and waited for a rerun!!

Customer Review: Best production of Pride & Prejudice Available

Compared to other available reproductions of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, the dialog is very accurate - which makes this a long film, but a must have for any Jane Austen lover, or for any admirer of Mr. Darcy, whom Colin Firth portrays excellently.

Should Online Article Submission Websites List Author's Previous Books?

Recently one of the top online article submission websites has considered listing books by the authors who post their articles online as an added bonus to the these top online expert writers. Should Online Article Submission Websites list these writers and authors Previous Books? Well it seems to be a good idea and many authors who have written books have considered this.

But how many books should such a website list? The number three was proposed? But what if the author has 6 books or ten even? What if the books are not real books with ISBN numbers, but rather are eBooks online? Should these also be listed? Should there be active links to Amazon.com in case a reader wishes to buy a book?

These are all good points indeed; maybe three at the top and three at the bottom of the page? That is six. You know once someone goes to Amazon is says; "See all the Books by this Author" they can view them all there too. I like the idea of being able to promote an authors books in the online article byline, without getting too tricky, because that means perhaps less article captures from some websites and ezines. Also a point or rather a thought how about one book and a click; see all the books by this author; takes you to a new page on this site. Then each book listed there.

Real Books with links to Amazon.com with ISBNs and also e-Books on writer's websites or LuLu.com or where ever else they maybe with a place for a brief synopsis. The online article submission site could add pages this way and all the synopsis paragraphs will be "Key Word Rich" for ads from the online article submission site?s click ads relationships. Additionally if each author had three to five books per page, the reader could read about them all and keep going. Just hope you do not get another Issac Asimov here; he wrote 200 Books. WOW. Now that guy could write. Consider all this in 2006.

Should Small Businesses Have Scrapbooks?

Think back to the 1800?s. We can actually produce a visual image based on what we?ve been told, what we?ve read in history books and what we?ve seen on t.v. One of my favorite movie trilogies is Back to the Future. Of course, one of those movies is based back in the 1800?s, so I always conjure up those images when I think of the 1800?s.

Without written accounts of what happened, this era would be lost to us. For anyone who affiliates with a religion that uses a bible, again written accounts tell readers what happened hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Businesses are no different. By keeping a written and visual account of what?s happened, this information is preserved into the future.

I have a scrapbook of all the articles I?ve ever written. I chuckle at how my thinking has changed over the years.

What else changes with a small business? Logos change. Save one of your business cards, a sheet of stationary, a copy of your web banner. Mission statements change. Type these out, put them on the business stationary you are using at the time. Labels on products change. Create scrapbook pages of your product labels as they change over the years. Formulas and recipes change. Again, choose a scrapbook paper that fits your business focus and put your formulas and recipes on these pages and then add them to your business scrapbook. Advertising changes, verbiage that worked 10 years ago, may not work today, but might work 10 years from now. Save copies of all of your ads. If you have employees, they too may change over the years. Take photos of your employees. Write a short bio of those who have worked for you.

I have saved all of my website pages over the years. I keep them stored on a DVD, but I also have pages printed that I keep in a scrapbook. Time changes, time moves forward. Your business will change and grow as time moves forward. Keep your business history in a scrapbook.

Make Extra Money Selling Ebooks Online

Can you get rich selling ebooks? Yes ofcourse, you can earn a very nice income selling them online.

Ebooks are electronic versions of printed material that can contain text, sound and images. The profit potential from selling them is high because the start up and operating expenses are very low.

You can even make more money if you write some of your own ebooks. Your writing skills do not have to be stellar. There are online sources that will take your research and craft an ebook for you. Some of these companies even take care of marketing, payments and shipping.

Buying Ebooks for Sale

You can purchase them from authors online. eBay is another source for buying ebooks with resell rights. Your customers can also sell these books, thus providing an incentive for them to do business with you.

Make sure the ebooks you buy or write yourself are full of useful information and resources. Some of them are nothing more than ads and sales pitches for the writers products. These ads will turn off customers and decrease repeat business.

Do your research to determine what types of information people are seeking. Getting rich selling informative products onlne will depend on the topics covered, customer base and marketing campaign.

Make sure to do an online search for the title before buying them for resale. If lots of web sites are selling the book, its probably a popular title and will be a good seller. It also helps to sell ebooks that cater to a specific market niche. Search online forums and other group sites to locate potential target markets for niche titles. Contact these groups with a short email inviting them to visit your site. Offer an incentive such as 20% off first purchase to increase site traffic.

Ebooks about current trends or hot topics will generate more income. Your income will really get a boost if you can spot the next big topic and write or purchase to sell before the competition saturates the market.

Marketing Extras

You can use a common template for your ebooks web site or sell them on an existing site you already have. However, to stand out from the competition, create your own web site to sell these products. Always add new titles to your stock to keep old customers coming back and to attract new ones. Use email to notify customers of new titles and special sales. Offer discounts on slow moving titles.

Affiliate programs are another way to get rich selling ebooks. The affiliate pays you a commission for the quantities you sell. To make money from ebooks you write, start your own affiliate program.

There are plenty of online and print books that will help you learn how to get in on the sales bandwagon. Do yourself a favour and search online. You will definitely find a good one.

DEWALT Electrical Professional Reference (Dewalt Trade Reference Series)
Find answers quickly and easily with this on-the-job reference! Updated to the 2005 NEC®, the DEWALT® Electrical Professional Reference is the standard reference tool for professionals working in the electrical industry. It is packed with charts, diagrams, formulas, tables, and current code standards on many aspects of designing and installing electrical services. This book also includes valuable information on ampacity, motors, controllers, circuits, overload protection, raceways, wiring, voltage, lighting, and more.

Customer Review: Unless your an engineer, pass on this

This book contains plenty info, but most of it isn't relevent to a maitenance man or repair man

Customer Review: Too much like a code book

I was looking for something that would put the key information in simpler terms without all the extra wording that goes into a code book for legal/political reasons. It may be useful to some but not to me.

Comanche Moon

Comanche Moon
Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae pursue three outlaws, Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump, Comanche horse thief Kicking Wolf and a Mexican bandit king. Now in their middle years, they also struggle with their personal lives, Gus with Clara Forsythe, the love of his life, and Call with Maggie Tilton, the young prostitute who loves him. Meanwhile their partners-in-arms Deets, Jake Spoon and Pea Eye Parker help the Rangers protect the advancing western frontier from the defiant Comanches who are determined to defend their land and way of life. Prequel to Lonesome Dove, and based upon the novel by Larry McMurty.

Customer Review: A Bad western movie!

The acting and dialogue are bad. The file is slow and boring. The are no "fighting scenes" in the whole movies. What I mean is that in all those scenes, only one side was shooting at the other for a couple of minutes. Then it ended.

Save your money on this.

Customer Review: Excellent

If you love the Lonesome Dove series from Dead Man's Walk, Lonesome Dove, "Return to Lonesome Dove," and Streets of Laredo and then Lonsome Dove the series and The Outlaw years. Then your going to love Comance Moon. Now all we need is a better

Closure to Newt's life as a final chapter. If you don't understand this, start to watch from the biggining to the missing end.

Abbey Road

Abbey Road
The Beatles' last days as a band were as productive as any major pop phenomenon that was about to split. After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, "Come Together" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ("Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End") is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky "Her Majesty," which follows. --Rickey Wright

Customer Review: Amazing (as all of them were)

while not my favorite beatles album, it is still amazing. The first side has great song after great song and the second side fits so well together and the trio at the end is perfection. great album, awesome cover, awesome band, and just one of their best albums.

Highlights:

Come Together

Something

Oh! Darling

I Want You (She's So Heavy)

Because

Here Comes the Sun

Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight/The End

Customer Review: A magnificent Finale.

As the band was breaking up and each member was getting into his own music this final recording is a fine legacy and wonderfull gift to their fans.

Strong contributions from all, don't let anyone tell you Ringo was not a very good rock drummer. He adds significantly to the Beatles sound. George's "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something" saw him come of age as a song writer, Frank Sinatra called the later song the greatest Love song ever written, I wont argue with Frank.

This, their last recording was recorded after Let it Be but released before, all the Beatles went on to successful solo careers, however never individually captured the quality of Abbey Road. Truely earning the Classic label.

Verilux Natural Spectrum Deluxe Portable Lamp

Verilux Natural Spectrum Deluxe Portable Lamp
Customer Review: An excellent reading lamp

I've been using this as a reading lamp in both my home and work offices for about the past six months, and generally have been happy with it. The other posters certainly are right about the sticky residue, although the company name doesn't bother me, I guess, as I'm withing viewing range of my Samsung monitor, Jamo speakers, Logitech keyboard, Brother printer, etc., etc.)

I haven't thought about this lamp as being portable, given that it weighs over 3 pounds, but if you read a lot it might be worth taking along. It certainly is bright, but not overly so. I find the natural spectrum light makes the material easier to read and causes less eyestrain than regular incandescent or fluorescent light. The bulb does put out some heat, so be careful.

There's one annoying quirk. In my office, the lamp is near my Tivoli table radio. When the lamp is on, it causes an electronic buzzing on the FM band. There may be some filtering I can do to solve this problem, but I haven't found it yet.

Customer Review: Not the product I expected

I bought this product specifically because it was originally described as being/having "mood-brightening Natural Spectrum light." I thought it would help on the gloomy Pacific Northwest winter days. I got it on a Friday sale price, so it seemed like a good value for the product description given here.

The lamp just arrived (a few days ago - when I originally submitted this review), and the product's FAQ sheet states this product is "designed only to provide excellent quality light for daily tasks and hobbies. This lamp does *not* offer the correct level of light intensity specified by the National Institute of Mental Health for the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.).

The product literature packed with the lamp has no mention at all that this product offers "mood-brightening" light. Because of this glaring misrepresentation, I am currently debating whether to the return the lamp.

I agree with the other reviewer that the adhesive labels (there are two) are VERY sticky and difficult to remove completely. I used a combination of methods to remove the adhesive residue.

And I agree with the comments about the company name being printed on the front of the lamp. When I saw it in the picture, I thought it had to be some kind of company watermark or logo for the stock photo ONLY, so I was shocked to see "Verilux" actually printed/embossed into the lamp housing, in a very prominent location on the front of the lamp. Very cheesy, for a lamp of this price point and quality.

If you're looking for a "clean" bright light, in a stylish, portable lamp, this is not a bad choice. But if you're looking for a full-spectrum light that does offer some light "therapy," this is probably the wrong choice. The company does have other, "therapeutic" lighting options, but at a higher price point.

Nov 1, 2006 UPDATE - I was concerned enough about the original, misleading product description that I submitted my concerns to Amazon. I now see that the description had been revised since submitting those concerns. I want to thank Amazon for their very prompt response in correcting the product description, which should help other buyers make a more-informed decision.
