Credit Cards For Tuition And Books? There Are Better Ways To Manage Student Debt

The price of a college education has risen dramatically in the last ten years. Prices of tuition, room and board and books have increased much faster than the rate of inflation, and students and their parents have struggled to find ways to pay for these increases.

A recent study by the Smith College Women and Financial Independence Program found that nearly one quarter of college students are using their credit cards to pay for some of their college expenses. This is a poor choice, as we shall soon see.

Unlike a generation ago, most students today have at least one major credit card. The lending industry has aggressively targeted college students and made it very easy for them to obtain cards. The problem is that most people of college age have relatively little money management experience and tend to use the cards rather foolishly.

About ten percent of college students have balances on their credit cards of at least $5000, and much of this debt is attributable to using the cards for college expenses.

The main problem is the interest rate on credit cards, which tends to be much higher than other borrowing choices for tuition. The Federal Stafford student loan program offers rates for tuition in the neighborhood of 5%, and that?s after an increase that recently went into effect. Five percent is a dramatic improvement over the 20% or so that one might pay using a credit card.

Other options are available. Some universities will allow payments; students should inquire to see if they can simply pay on installments. Even if interest is added, it undoubtedly will be a less expensive option than paying by credit card. There are student loan programs available for the parents of students at favorable rates that are only slightly higher than those for Federal student loans.

Students need to understand how to use credit cards responsibly. The best use for credit cards is for a purchase that can be afforded immediately, not a long term purchase. Buying textbooks with a credit card is OK as long as you can pay the bill when it comes at the end of the month. Putting a semester?s tuition on the card, with no idea as to how or when it might be repaid, is a poor choice.

Students who develop bad spending habits early are more likely to have problem debt down the road, and may be headed towards early bankruptcy as their spending hurts their credit report.

Anyone who has questions about how to effectively pay for education expenses should contact his or her school?s administration. They can point out which department or departments may be able to help assist with expenses in a way that won?t drive students straight into a life of problem debt.

Open Season
Open Season is a riotous romp in the great outdoors, where rowdy forest animals turns the tables on unsuspecting hunters. When a domesticated grizzly named Boog leaves the creature comforts of home with a mule deer named Elliot, he finds himself lost in the woods just three days before hunting season. Forced to "rough it" in the great outdoors, Boog goes native, rallying all the forest animals to take back their home and send the hunters packing.

Customer Review: so-so, wish it was longer.

Super cute.

Even though I am an adult, I love kids games.

BUT the game is so short. It took just a few short hours to complete.

Customer Review: All Game -- No Violence

What I love most about this game is that it doesn't have violence even though it's got a hunting theme. The animals are lovable characters, and it's good to get a game that both small boys and girls can enjoy -- and of course everyone older too!

There should be more family oriented X-Box 360 games like this one.

The Fall of Reach (Halo)

The Fall of Reach (Halo)

As the bloody Human-Covenant War rages on Halo, the fate of humankind may rest with one warrior, the lone SPARTAN survivor of another legendary battle... the desperate, take-no-prisoners struggle that led humanity to Halo—the fall of the planet Reach. Now, brought to life for the first time, here is the full story of that glorious, doomed conflict.

While the brutal Covenant juggernaut sweeps inexorably through space, intent on wiping out humankind, only one stronghold remains—the planet Reach. Practically on Earth’s doorstep, it is the last military fortress to defy the onslaught. But the personnel here have another, higher priority: to prevent the Covenant from discovering the location of Earth.

Outnumbered and outgunned, the soldiers seem to have little chance against the Covenant, but Reach holds a closely guarded secret. It is the training ground for the very first “super soldiers.” Code-named SPARTANs, these highly advanced warriors, specially bioengineered and technologically augmented, are the best in the universe—quiet, professional, and deadly.

Now, as the ferocious Covenant attack begins, a handful of SPARTANs stand ready to wage ultimate war. They will kill, they will be destroyed, but they will never surrender. And at least one of them—the SPARTAN known as Master Chief—will live to fight another day on a mysterious and ancient, artificial world called Halo....

Customer Review: Halo: The Fall of Reach

This is an action packed thriller! "Halo: The Fall of Reach" is an okay book I think. This novel is about how the way the great Spartan, "Master Chief" came to be. It is hard for someone young to read, and has some foul language. This book has some very, vivid, intense action scenes. After saying that, when the Spartan's aren't in battle, the story is very boring.

Master Chief's real name is John. He was taken away from his family when he was young to become an elite soldier called a Spartan. Every day, they train and train, until John and the other Spartans are needed in battle, a battle to save humanity. They are needed to fight the brutal covenant. As the covenant attacks, the Spartans stay ready. The Spartans one rule is, "Never Surrender". Master chief also knows that he will have to live if the humans will ever have a chance against the covenant, on the strange, artificial world of Halo.

You will love this book if you like to read, and you can understand war novels. It is a very fast paced book, and uses a very adult dialogue. In all, I will give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Customer Review: An encouraging book fit for young adults!

Halo: Fall of Reach is an encouraging book by Erik Nylund that brings out the character in people, especially the Hako gamer fans. It's a science fiction book about a boy who gets sent to a new facility for spartans. Spartans are highly developed soldiers who have the highest rank a soldier can have. It really encourages bravery, trust and, well, the whole storyline itself. this book definatly deserves a four and a half out of five stars but I cant do that so I gave it a five. I recomend this book to any young adult who likes the Halo games.

To Kill a Mockingbird (Widescreen)

To Kill a Mockingbird (Widescreen)
Ranked 34 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American Films, To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-oriented dramas ever made. A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, the film retains a timeless quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter (racism in the Depression-era South) and remains powerfully resonant in present-day America with its advocacy of tolerance, justice, integrity, and loving, responsible parenthood. It's tempting to call this an important "message" movie that should be required viewing for children and adults alike, but this riveting courtroom drama is anything but stodgy or pedantic. As Atticus Finch, the small-town Alabama lawyer and widower father of two, Gregory Peck gives one of his finest performances with his impassioned defense of a black man (Brock Peters) wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman. While his children, Scout (Mary Badham) and Jem (Philip Alford), learn the realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred, they also learn to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious, mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley (Robert Duvall, in his brilliant, almost completely nonverbal screen debut). What emerges from this evocative, exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of Harper Lee's enduring novel, a showcase for some of the finest American acting ever assembled in one film, and a rare quality of humanitarian artistry (including Horton Foote's splendid screenplay and Elmer Bernstein's outstanding score) that seems all but lost in the chaotic morass of modern cinema. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: Worth Every Penny!

I don't know why Harper Lee stopped writing after To Kill A Mockingbird. This two disc DVD edition is worth every penny. The film is a classic starring Oscar Winner, Gregory Peck, in the character that became his signature role. The supporting cast is equally stellar with the children, Jem and Scout. We hear about how the children on the set were invited to the Peck home to spend the weekends. The cast included Ruth White as Mrs. Dubose which her part was cut short in the film than in the book. I have collected a lot of Ruth White memorabilia. She spent four hours in make-up each day. Alice Ghostley plays a neighbor and mother. Mary Badham who played Scout never really became a household name but she does not regret doing the film one bit. Scout is immortalized by her performance as a tough but sensitive young girl. The two disc set features tributes to Gregory Peck from his daughter, Celia Peck, as well as his Oscar winning speech and the AFI tribute to him.
